We’ve all done it – the accidental spill of a steaming cup of coffee on our laps when we least expect it. Though, most of us are not flying an airplane in the process. A United Airlines (NASDAQ:UAL) flight from Chicago to Frankfurt, Germany, took an unscheduled pit stop in Canada, after the pilot spilled coffee and accidentally triggered a hijacking alert. United Flight 940 landed safely Monday night at Pearson International Airport, after the coffee spill sent out distress signals, including code 7500 – used in instances of a hijacking. A report on Transport Canada’s website said the pilot “had inadvertently squawked a 7500 code after spilling coffee on the aircraft’s radio equipment, which interfered with the communications equipment.” Flight 940′s crew was able to confirm with Canadian airline authorities that the distress signal was a mistake, and that the pilot chose to divert the flight to Canada, instead of flying across the Atlantic Ocean with a triggered distress signal. 241 passengers and 14 crew members were onboard the international flight, which was flown back to Chicago on a separate plane Monday; the passengers and crew members were given complimentary overnight hotel rooms and the flight resumed course on Tuesday. The Canadian Defense Department was not notified of the incident.
